5th birthday shirts
School has started, and what other children recognise begins to matter.
Characters for this age What size to buy
The important change at five is not the child’s taste but their audience. School has started, other children now see the shirt, and a character that means something at home but nothing in a playground is a different proposition than it was a year earlier. Choice starts to be partly social, and it is the first birthday where the child may want a say in something other than which character they like best.
Practically, this is a settled year for sizing. Youth XS covers most five-year-olds, the toddler cuts are behind you, and the licensed catalogue is at its widest — almost every property in this catalogue is manufactured in 4/5.

Sizes vary between licensees. Where a listing publishes its own measurements, those are the ones to trust. Our full US size guide covers toddler 2T through adult 3XL.
What matters at 5
- Ask them rather than inferring. Five is old enough to have a considered answer and young enough to give you a straight one.
- Playground currency is real. A character other children recognise gets worn more than one only the family knows.
- This is the widest band in the licensed catalogue — nearly everything is made in 4/5, so availability is rarely the constraint.
- Two youth smalls from different licensees can differ by a full inch across the chest. Where a listing publishes measurements, trust those over the size letter.

Common questions
What size shirt does a 5-year-old wear?
Youth XS (4/5), which suits a child measuring roughly 22–23 in around the chest. That is the child, not the shirt: US children's sizes are labelled by age rather than measurement, and the garment itself is cut several inches larger. Where build and age disagree, measure a shirt that already fits and compare it against the listing.
Should a fifth birthday shirt have the age printed on it?
Generally not, if you want it worn again. A printed number makes the shirt wrong from the following morning, and by school age most children notice.
How far ahead should you order?
At least a week, and longer if a specific size is essential. Licensed children’s apparel goes out of stock by individual size rather than by product, and the common sizes are the ones that go first.
