Who is Pluto?

Pluto is Mickey's dog, and unlike Goofy he is written as an actual dog: he walks on four legs, does not talk, and acts entirely through expression and timing. He appeared in 1930, first as an unnamed bloodhound in The Chain Gang and then as Minnie's dog Rover, before being named Pluto in 1931 — a name widely linked to the planet announced the year before. Animator Norm Ferguson made him a star with a single sequence in Playful Pluto in 1934, in which the dog fights a sheet of flypaper for over a minute. It is often cited as one of the first times animation showed a character thinking, and it established the style of pantomime Pluto has used ever since.
