Peanuts

Snoopy

Snoopy began as an ordinary dog on four legs with no inner life and became, over about fifteen years, the strip's most complex character — a beagle with a rich fantasy existence in which he is a First World War flying ace, a novelist who never gets past the first sentence, a college student and a lawyer. Schulz never let him speak aloud; everything is thought balloons and physical performance, which is a substantial constraint given how much of the strip he eventually carried.

Who is Snoopy?

Snoopy began as an ordinary dog on four legs with no inner life and became, over about fifteen years, the strip's most complex character — a beagle with a rich fantasy existence in which he is a First World War flying ace, a novelist who never gets past the first sentence, a college student and a lawyer. Schulz never let him speak aloud; everything is thought balloons and physical performance, which is a substantial constraint given how much of the strip he eventually carried. The Flying Ace sequences are the strip's most sustained departure from realism and its most direct treatment of loss, with a dog on a doghouse fighting an enemy who never appears and never loses. Snoopy is also the most commercially significant element of Peanuts by a wide margin, and NASA has used him as a safety mascot since 1968.

Why Snoopy endures

The most commercially valuable comic strip character ever created, and an unusual example of a non-speaking character carrying the emotional weight of a major body of work. His association with NASA has also made him a genuine institutional symbol.

What Snoopy looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: A white beagle with black ears, usually on top of a red doghouse

Pure black-on-white line art, which is unusual in this category and the reason Peanuts apparel looks so different from everything around it. Schulz's actual drawn line is part of the appeal, so designs reproduce it rather than redrawing the character.

Black-and-white line art is the signature and looks completely distinct from the colour-saturated rest of this category. Cream, oatmeal, red and navy garments suit it. Schulz's original line is reproduced rather than redrawn, which matters — the wobble in the line is the appeal.
