Winnie-the-Pooh

Winnie-the-Pooh began as a set of stories A. A. Milne told about his son Christopher Robin's actual toys, and almost every character corresponds to a real stuffed animal that survives today in the New York Public Library. The bear was named after a black bear at London Zoo called Winnie — herself named for Winnipeg — combined with a swan called Pooh.

Who is Winnie-the-Pooh?

Winnie-the-Pooh began as a set of stories A. A. Milne told about his son Christopher Robin's actual toys, and almost every character corresponds to a real stuffed animal that survives today in the New York Public Library. The bear was named after a black bear at London Zoo called Winnie — herself named for Winnipeg — combined with a swan called Pooh. The books are more formally interesting than their reputation suggests: they are narrated with a light irony aimed over the child's head at the adult reading aloud, and they treat their characters' anxieties seriously. Two quite different visual traditions now coexist: E. H. Shepard's spare pen-and-ink line drawings, and Disney's rounder red-shirted version from 1966, which is the one most people picture.

Why Winnie-the-Pooh endures

One of the most enduring characters in children's literature and among the highest-earning licensed properties in the world. The coexistence of two distinct visual traditions, one literary and one corporate, is unusual and commercially significant.

Signature motif: A round yellow bear in a small red top, usually with a honey pot

Two distinct visual traditions sell side by side and appeal to different buyers: Shepard's delicate pen-and-ink illustration reads as literary and suits adult and nursery apparel, while the Disney colour version dominates children's sizing.

The two traditions serve different buyers. Shepard line art reads as literary and works beautifully on cream, oatmeal and heather garments for adults and nursery wear. Disney's colour version is the standard for children's sizing. Honey pot and quote-led designs are both common.
