Who is Bambi?
Bambi is a young deer growing up in a forest, and his story began as a novel for adults. The Austrian writer Felix Salten published Bambi, a Life in the Woods in 1923, and it was a serious, often bleak book about nature and hunting. Walt Disney's 1942 film softened it and gave Bambi the friends most people now picture: Thumper the rabbit and Flower the skunk. The studio went to unusual lengths for realism, bringing live deer to the studio so animators could draw them and hiring the artist Rico Lebrun to lecture on animal anatomy; Salten's roe deer became North American white-tailed deer. The look of the forest owes much to Tyrus Wong, whose soft, impressionistic paintings, influenced by Song dynasty landscape art, set the style for the whole film. The death of Bambi's mother is one of the most discussed scenes in children's film. Released during the Second World War, when European markets were closed, Bambi at first disappointed at the box office, but it recovered through re-releases and was added to the National Film Registry in 2011. It is now one of Disney's most enduring images, especially on children's and nursery clothing.
