Who is Snow White?

The industry called it Disney's Folly, and the reasoning was sound: nobody had made a feature-length cel-animated film in English before, audiences were assumed to be unable to tolerate ninety minutes of drawing, and the budget ran several times over. It became the highest-grossing film released to that point. The technical inheritance is larger than the commercial one — the multiplane camera, built to move through layers of artwork at different depths, gave animation a sense of space it had never had, and the Academy responded with an honorary award presented as one full-size statuette accompanied by seven small ones. Adriana Caselotti, who voiced her, was reportedly kept from other work to preserve the association. The primary-colour costume of red, yellow and blue was chosen to stand out against the forest, and it is the reason the character is legible in silhouette.

The film that created the animated feature as a commercial form, and the character every studio heroine since descends from.

What Snow White looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Red bow, yellow skirt, blue bodice — and the poisoned apple

The apple has become the adult design and the figure the child one. A single red apple with one bite taken is one of the most efficient pieces of licensed shorthand available: no face, no name, entirely unambiguous.

Primary red, yellow and blue on white or heather grey. The single bitten apple is the adult garment; the full figure is a toddler and youth print. Vintage-poster treatments do well in adult sizing.
