Who is Minnie Mouse?
Minnie appeared in the same 1928 short as Mickey and has been beside him ever since, but her commercial trajectory has been quite different and in some respects stronger. Her design solves the same problem as his through a single addition: the bow. Because Mickey's silhouette is so reduced, a female counterpart could not be distinguished by body shape, so the differentiation is carried entirely by a polka-dotted bow and a skirt — and the bow has since detached from the character completely, becoming a standalone fashion motif sold on its own across enormous quantities of merchandise. Very few character elements achieve that kind of independence. Her original voice was performed by Marcellite Garner, an inker at the studio who was recruited because she happened to be available.

Why Minnie Mouse endures
One of the earliest female animated characters and, through the polka-dot bow, the source of one of the most reproduced design motifs in children's fashion — a graphic that now sells entirely independently of the character.

Signature motif: The polka-dot bow, matching skirt and heeled shoes
The bow is the whole design and it has become an independent graphic — sold on apparel with no character attached at all. Red-and-white polka dot is the classic pairing; pink and pastel variants dominate girls' sizing.
The bow alone identifies her, which makes it exceptionally flexible: it works as a small repeated pattern, a single large graphic or a headband-style print across the chest. Red-and-white polka dot for classic designs, pink and pastel for younger sizing.
