Who is Mickey Mouse?

Mickey Mouse was created out of a contractual disaster. Walt Disney lost the rights to his previous character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, to his distributor in 1928 along with most of his animation staff, and needed a replacement immediately; Ub Iwerks drew the new character, and Disney supplied the voice. Steamboat Willie was not the first cartoon with sound but it was the first to synchronise sound to action convincingly, and that is what made it a sensation. The design has been simplified continuously ever since — Iwerks built him from circles because circles were fast to draw consistently, and the head, ears and body remain circles today. The ears are the crucial detail: they are drawn as perfect circles facing the viewer regardless of how the head is turned, which is anatomically impossible and is precisely why the silhouette is unmistakable.

Mickey Mouse: the details

First public appearance
Steamboat Willie, November 1928, though two earlier shorts were produced first
Created by
Ub Iwerks did the drawing; Walt Disney supplied the character's voice for two decades
Created out of necessity
Disney had just lost Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and most of his staff to his distributor
Nearly called Mortimer
Widely reported that Lillian Disney suggested Mickey as a less pompous alternative
Why the ears never move
They are drawn as circles facing the viewer regardless of head angle — impossible in three dimensions, and the reason the silhouette is unmistakable
The gloves
Added so that hands were visible against a black body in monochrome animation

Why Mickey Mouse endures

The most recognised fictional character on earth and the foundation of the modern entertainment licensing industry. His silhouette also functions as a corporate identity for one of the world's largest media companies, which is a dual role no other character occupies.

What Mickey Mouse looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Three circles: the head and two ears. Red shorts, yellow shoes, white gloves

The three-circle silhouette is probably the most efficient character mark ever designed — it is recognisable with no face, no colour and no detail whatsoever. It works at any size, in any single colour, on any garment, which is why it appears on more merchandise than any other character in existence.

The three-circle head is the single most versatile mark in this category — it works in one colour at any size, as an outline, a solid shape or a pattern. Classic 1928 rubber-hose-era artwork is a strong adult treatment; full-colour modern Mickey dominates children's sizing.
