Who is Baymax?
Baymax is the rare case of a character design that came out of an engineering lab. The team visited Carnegie Mellon, where researchers were working on inflatable robotics — soft actuators, vinyl skins, machines built to be safe to bump into — and came back with a nurse robot that looks like a balloon and moves like one. Everything else follows from that premise. He cannot run. He squeaks when he walks. His face is two dots and a line, borrowed from a Japanese temple bell called a suzu, and it does not change expression once in the film, which means every emotional beat has to be carried by posture. The property itself is Marvel's, a 1998 comic team by Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau that the animation studio bought the rights to and reworked almost completely.
