Who is Cinderella?
Cinderella saved the studio. The war years had left Disney making cheap package films out of unrelated shorts, deep in debt and without a feature hit since Snow White, and the 1950 film was close to a last attempt at a full-length fairy tale. It worked, and the money from it paid for Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and the beginnings of Disneyland. Marc Davis and Eric Larson animated her from live-action reference footage shot with Helene Stanley, a method the studio used heavily in this period and which gives the character a naturalism the 1937 films do not have. The pale blue ballgown is the studio's invention — Charles Perrault, writing in 1697, never specifies a colour — and it is now so fixed that the silhouette alone identifies the character.
