Who is Betty Boop?
Betty Boop did not start out human. Grim Natwick drew her in 1930 as a caricatured dog with long ears, and over the following two years the ears became earrings and the character became a woman — an unusual piece of evolution to be able to watch frame by frame. The films around her are the strangest mainstream American animation ever made: jazz-scored, rubber-limbed, frequently surreal, sometimes with Cab Calloway rotoscoped into them performing his own music. The Hays Code arrived in 1934 and comprehensively redesigned her, lengthening the hemline, removing the garter and putting her into domestic settings, and the shorts lose most of what made them interesting. Helen Kane sued over the vocal style and lost. The character has had a continuous licensed apparel market for ninety years.
