Who is Garfield?

Jim Davis approached Garfield as a market problem before he approached it as a strip. He had watched an earlier comic about a bug fail, noticed that the papers were full of dogs and short of cats, and set out deliberately to build something with mass appeal and licensing headroom. He has been unusually candid about this. What makes it work anyway is that the jokes are constructed with real precision — three panels, a fixed cast, a narrow set of obsessions in food, sleep and contempt for Mondays — and drawn in a heavy flat line specifically so they survive small newsprint reproduction. It became the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world. The name comes from Davis's grandfather, James Garfield Davis.

Why Garfield endures

A strip engineered for licensing that turned out to be genuinely well made, and the most widely syndicated comic in the world.

What Garfield looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Orange tabby with heavy black stripes and half-closed eyes

Drawn from the start in flat black line to survive cheap newsprint, which is exactly the property that makes a design print well on fabric. Orange and black at any size, on any garment colour, with no detail to lose.

Flat heavy line, two colours, no gradients — among the most forgiving prints on the site. Works at every size band and on every fabric colour. Mondays and lasagna slogan designs are the adult sellers.
