The form imposes a specific discipline: three or four panels, a joke that lands in under ten seconds, a cast that never changes, and artwork that must survive being printed small on cheap paper. That last requirement is why strip characters make such good garments — they were designed from the start to be legible at postage-stamp size in flat black line. Popeye arrived in an existing strip in 1929; Garfield launched in 1978 and became the most widely syndicated strip in the world.
Strip art was drawn to survive small, cheap reproduction, which is precisely what makes it print well on fabric.
