Who is Popeye?

Popeye was a walk-on. E. C. Segar had been drawing Thimble Theatre for ten years about an entirely different cast when he needed a sailor for one storyline in January 1929, and the sailor took the strip over within months and eventually took its name. The Fleischer studio began animating him in 1933 and the shorts are among the best American animation of the decade — urban, improvised-sounding, scored like a jazz record. The spinach is the part everyone gets wrong: the story that it comes from a misplaced decimal point in a nineteenth-century iron measurement is folklore, and Segar himself cited vitamin A. What is documented is that American spinach consumption rose sharply during the 1930s, and growers publicly credited the character.

Why Popeye endures

A supporting character who annexed the strip he walked into, and one of the few fictional figures credibly linked to a change in what a country ate.

What Popeye looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Sailor cap, corncob pipe, oversized forearms with an anchor tattoo

The forearms are the design. Wildly out of proportion to the rest of the figure, they make the silhouette unmistakable at any size, and the anchor tattoo gives a second standalone motif that works on its own as a nautical print.

The exaggerated forearms make the silhouette work with no face. The anchor tattoo is a strong standalone nautical motif for adult sizing. Navy, white and cream all suit the palette.
