Who is Cruella de Vil?

Cruella de Vil is half-black, half-white hair, a fur coat and a plan for ninety-nine puppies. She began in Dodie Smith's 1956 novel, which already had the name — a pun on cruel devil — and the fur obsession. The 1961 Disney film kept all of it and added speed. Marc Davis animated her as a figure made of angles, all bony shoulders and a cigarette holder, driving a car that seems to be chasing her own temper. The film itself is a technical landmark: it was the first Disney feature to use xerography to transfer animators' drawings directly onto cels, a change made partly because inking ninety-nine puppies' worth of spots by hand was impractical. That process gave the film its scratchy, sketchbook line. Betty Lou Gerson voiced her, and Mel Leven's song made the name a jingle. Glenn Close played her in 1996, and Emma Stone's 2021 film reimagined her as a fashion designer, which is exactly where her apparel sits: monochrome, sharp and meant for adults.

Why Cruella de Vil endures

A novelist's villain whose film introduced xerography to Disney animation, and whose monochrome look made her a fashion character.

What Cruella de Vil looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Split black-and-white hair, fur coat, red gloves

Black and white with one red accent is as clean as a licensed palette gets, and it matches the monochrome fashion prints she is usually sold as. Dalmatian spots give a second, character-free design.

Monochrome with a single red accent — very clean on white, grey or black. Fashion-sketch and split-hair designs are the adult sellers; Dalmatian-spot patterns suit children.
