Maleficent

Maleficent is a black silhouette with horns, and almost everything about her follows from that. Marc Davis animated her for Sleeping Beauty in 1959 as a figure built from sharp vertical lines and a collar that flares like bat wings, matched to the medieval, tapestry-flat look that Eyvind Earle imposed on the whole film.

Who is Maleficent?

Maleficent is a black silhouette with horns, and almost everything about her follows from that. Marc Davis animated her for Sleeping Beauty in 1959 as a figure built from sharp vertical lines and a collar that flares like bat wings, matched to the medieval, tapestry-flat look that Eyvind Earle imposed on the whole film. The fairy tale never gave her a name — Charles Perrault's 1697 version has an unnamed old fairy who was not invited, and Tchaikovsky's ballet calls her Carabosse — so the name, the horns, the raven and the dragon are all the studio's. Eleanor Audley voiced her with a precise, theatrical calm that makes the menace colder rather than louder. The film was expensive and disappointed at the box office on release, and its villain has long outlived that verdict: she now anchors the adult market for Disney villain apparel, and a 2014 live-action retelling with Angelina Jolie put her at the centre of her own story.

Why Maleficent endures

The studio's most visually distinctive villain, whose silhouette anchors the adult market for Disney villain apparel.

What Maleficent looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Horned headdress, high flared collar, green flame

The horned silhouette is recognisable in pure black on any light fabric, and the green of her fire is the one accent it needs. It is one of the few Disney designs that reads as elegant rather than cute on adult sizing.

Silhouette designs in black with a green accent work on light and heather fabric; on black fabric use the green flame or a purple-edged outline. Strong for adults and teens, where villain designs outsell heroines.
