Scar

Andreas Deja animated three of the studio's best villains in a row — Gaston, Jafar, then Scar — and Scar is the one where the drawing does the most work. Everything about the design is a withdrawal: the mane hangs rather than frames, the body is narrow where Mufasa's is broad, the eyes are half-lidded, and he moves as little as possible while everyone around him moves a great deal.

Who is Scar?

Andreas Deja animated three of the studio's best villains in a row — Gaston, Jafar, then Scar — and Scar is the one where the drawing does the most work. Everything about the design is a withdrawal: the mane hangs rather than frames, the body is narrow where Mufasa's is broad, the eyes are half-lidded, and he moves as little as possible while everyone around him moves a great deal. Jeremy Irons plays the voice as boredom rather than menace, which is far more unpleasant. The film takes its skeleton from Hamlet, and the musical number staged around goose-stepping hyenas is an unusually direct piece of imagery for a 1994 family film. It is one of very few Disney villains with a genuine adult apparel market of its own.

Why Scar endures

The high point of the studio's villain animation, and one of the few Disney antagonists with an adult apparel market of his own.

What Scar looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Black mane, narrow frame, the scarred eye, green eyes

One of the few Disney characters that reads properly in monochrome. Black mane on brown, or a pure silhouette, and the design holds — which is exactly why villain-led designs sell into adult sizing where the heroes do not.

Reads in monochrome, which almost nothing else in the Disney range does. Black on charcoal or heather for adult sizing; the villain designs outsell the heroes above youth sizes here.
