90s Character T-Shirts

The decade most retro character apparel is actually referring to.

When a listing says “retro” or “vintage” it usually means this decade, and the reason is demographic rather than aesthetic — the people buying licensed character apparel in the largest numbers were children in the 1990s. Cartoon Network launched in 1992, Nicktoons had arrived in 1991, and the Disney Renaissance was at its height, so there was simply more character television than at any point before it.

The design language is unusually consistent: flat colour, heavy black outline, no gradients, and a revival of the 1950s UPA studio style in shows like Dexter’s Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls. It was drawn that way to be cheap to animate, and the same properties make it close to ideal for screen printing — nothing to colour-separate, and nothing fine enough to lose.
