Who is Scorpion?

Scorpion is a yellow-clad ninja who throws a spear on a rope and pulls his opponent towards him with a shout. He appeared in the first Mortal Kombat arcade game from Midway in 1992, created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Because of memory limits, Scorpion and his rival Sub-Zero were the same digitised actor and sprite, recoloured yellow and blue, which is why the series later gained a whole set of colour-swapped ninjas. Boon himself recorded Scorpion's famous line. Later games gave him a detailed backstory: Hanzo Hasashi, a warrior killed along with his family and clan, who returns from the dead as a revenant seeking revenge, with a flaming skull beneath his mask. Chris Casamassa played him in the 1995 film and Hiroyuki Sanada in the 2021 film. Mortal Kombat's violence helped prompt the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board in 1994, and the series is rated for adults. Scorpion has appeared in almost every game since, and his mask, spear and skull are some of the best-known images in fighting games. His apparel is aimed at adult players.
