Kratos
Kratos is one of the few video game characters to be substantially rewritten and improved by his own sequel, and the change is instructive. The original 2005 games presented him as pure rage — a Spartan who murders his way through the Greek pantheon, with almost no reflection and no restraint.

Who is Kratos?
Kratos is one of the few video game characters to be substantially rewritten and improved by his own sequel, and the change is instructive. The original 2005 games presented him as pure rage — a Spartan who murders his way through the Greek pantheon, with almost no reflection and no restraint. The 2018 reinstallment relocated him to Norse mythology, aged him, gave him a son, and made the entire game about a violent man trying not to pass his violence on. The white skin and red tattoo remained but the meaning inverted: what had been a power fantasy became a study of shame. Very few long-running action franchises have attempted that kind of tonal reversal, and fewer have succeeded commercially while doing it. His ashen skin is not decoration but a curse, marking him permanently with the remains of his own family.

Why Kratos endures
The most successful tonal reinvention of a long-running action protagonist in games, and one of the medium's few sustained treatments of inherited violence and fatherhood.
What Kratos looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: Ash-white skin with a red tattoo running across the face and torso
A stark two-colour design — white and blood red — that is unusually strong graphically and completely unlike the primary-colour palettes elsewhere in this category. The red slash across a pale face is recognisable at any size.
White and blood red is a genuinely distinctive palette in this category and reads powerfully on black. The face tattoo alone is a workable minimal graphic. Norse-era designs use the axe and runic motifs. Adult sizing only on this site.
