Who is Spyro?

Spyro is a small purple dragon who charges with his horns and breathes fire. Insomniac Games made Spyro the Dragon for the original PlayStation in 1998, and two sequels followed by the end of 2000. Charles Zembillas, who also drew early designs for Crash Bandicoot, worked on the character's look, and the soundtrack was composed by Stewart Copeland, the drummer of the Police. The games were open three-dimensional worlds to explore, collecting gems and freeing other dragons frozen in crystal, and Spyro's dragonfly companion, Sparx, acts as his health meter by changing colour. Carlos Alazraqui voiced Spyro in the first game and Tom Kenny in later ones. After Insomniac moved on, the series changed hands several times, and Activision reinvented the character as the lead of the toy-and-game hybrid Skylanders in 2011. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy, a remake of the first three games by Toys for Bob, arrived in 2018 and brought the original version back to a new generation. Retro PlayStation designs of the purple dragon sell mostly to adults who played the originals.
