Creeper

The Creeper is a coding error that became the most recognisable thing in the best-selling game ever made. Markus Persson was attempting to model a pig, transposed the height and length values, and produced a tall thin upright creature instead of a long low one; rather than fix it he made it green, gave it four legs and no arms, and had it explode.

Who is Creeper?

The Creeper is a coding error that became the most recognisable thing in the best-selling game ever made. Markus Persson was attempting to model a pig, transposed the height and length values, and produced a tall thin upright creature instead of a long low one; rather than fix it he made it green, gave it four legs and no arms, and had it explode. Everything about its behaviour follows from that shape being unsettling: it makes almost no sound, approaches from behind, and the only warning is a hiss that gives the player under two seconds. That combination — silent approach, destroys your building, cannot be undone — produces a specific kind of dread that players remember years later, and the face has become the game's de facto logo.

Creeper: the details

Markus Persson, by accident
It was meant to be a pig
The height and length values were transposed, producing a tall upright creature instead of a long low one
Kept rather than fixed
Persson made it green, removed the arms, and had it explode
Under two seconds of warning
It approaches almost silently, and the hiss gives very little time to react
It destroys what you built
The damage is to the player's work rather than to the player, which is why it is remembered
The game's logo
The face has become the de facto emblem of the best-selling video game ever made

Why Creeper endures

A programming mistake that became the emblem of the best-selling video game in history, and one of the clearest cases of an accident being better than the intention.
