Who is Pikachu?

Atsuko Nishida has said the original design drew on squirrels rather than mice, particularly the cheeks, which is why the shape reads as rounder and less rodent-like than the name suggests. The name itself is built from Japanese onomatopoeia: pika for a sparking sound and chu for a mouse's squeak. From that starting point he became one of the most valuable licensed characters in the world, anchoring what is by most measures the highest-grossing media franchise ever created.
