Edward Elric
Fullmetal Alchemist opens with two children attempting to resurrect their dead mother and being maimed for it — one loses an arm and a leg, the other his entire body — and the series never lets them off. The governing rule, equivalent exchange, is stated early and then used against the characters relentlessly: nothing is free, grief does not entitle you to anything, and the cost of what they did is permanent.

Who is Edward Elric?
Fullmetal Alchemist opens with two children attempting to resurrect their dead mother and being maimed for it — one loses an arm and a leg, the other his entire body — and the series never lets them off. The governing rule, equivalent exchange, is stated early and then used against the characters relentlessly: nothing is free, grief does not entitle you to anything, and the cost of what they did is permanent. Hiromu Arakawa built the world on early industrial Europe and drew on her own upbringing on a Hokkaido dairy farm for the physicality and the humour. What separates the series from its genre is that its villains have a coherent political programme and its state is complicit in genocide, treated seriously rather than as backdrop. Ed is short, loud and touchy about it, which the series plays for comedy without ever undercutting the weight underneath.

Why Edward Elric endures
One of the most critically regarded manga ever published, and unusual in its genre for building a political argument about state violence into a story sold to teenagers.
