Link

Link is deliberately empty, and the design is explicit about why: he does not speak because the player is meant to occupy him, and Miyamoto named him Link because he was intended as the connection between the player and the world. The Legend of Zelda itself came from Miyamoto's childhood memories of exploring caves and woodland near Kyoto, and the first game's refusal to explain itself — no map, no direction, a world you simply walk into — was an attempt to reproduce that feeling of genuine discovery.

Who is Link?

Link is deliberately empty, and the design is explicit about why: he does not speak because the player is meant to occupy him, and Miyamoto named him Link because he was intended as the connection between the player and the world. The Legend of Zelda itself came from Miyamoto's childhood memories of exploring caves and woodland near Kyoto, and the first game's refusal to explain itself — no map, no direction, a world you simply walk into — was an attempt to reproduce that feeling of genuine discovery. Almost every Link is a different person; the series is a legend retold across eras rather than one continuous biography, which is why the character can be a child, an adult, a wolf or a sailor without contradiction. The green tunic and cap survived for decades before Breath of the Wild finally moved him to blue.

He does not speak so that the player can project onto him; this has been maintained across nearly forty years
Origin of the world
Miyamoto has described the game as an attempt to recreate exploring the caves and hillsides around his childhood home

Left-handed
Traditionally left-handed, switched for the Wii version of Twilight Princess to suit motion controls

Why Link endures

The definitive silent protagonist in video games, and the character through which the medium worked out how to make a player-avatar feel like a character without giving them a personality.

What Link looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Green tunic and pointed cap, the Master Sword, and the Triforce

The Triforce — three gold triangles forming a larger one — is the strongest mark in the franchise and one of the most elegant symbols in games: geometric, symmetrical, single-colour, and completely distinctive. It is used far more often than the character himself.

The Triforce is the dominant graphic and one of the best abstract marks in games — gold on black is close to unimprovable. Master Sword line art and minimalist geometric treatments also work well. The character himself appears more often in kids' sizing than adult.

Where a detail could not be corroborated it has been left out. We do not physically test garments; see how we work for what that means and what it does not.
