Bowser
Bowser was designed as an ox. Miyamoto's original conception drew on the ox-demon king from the Chinese novel Journey to the West, and it was Nintendo's staff artist who pointed out that the drawing looked considerably more like a turtle — a correction that produced the shelled, spiked design the character has kept ever since.

Who is Bowser?
Bowser was designed as an ox. Miyamoto's original conception drew on the ox-demon king from the Chinese novel Journey to the West, and it was Nintendo's staff artist who pointed out that the drawing looked considerably more like a turtle — a correction that produced the shelled, spiked design the character has kept ever since. He is one of the very few antagonists in games to have become genuinely likeable without being redeemed: the mainline games keep him as a straightforward threat while the enormous body of spin-offs have him playing tennis and go-karting with the people he is otherwise trying to abduct, and the franchise has never attempted to reconcile the two. The 2023 film leaned into it further by giving him a piano ballad. The Japanese name, Koopa, and the Western name, Bowser, both remain in use.

Why Bowser endures
One of the longest-serving antagonists in video games, and an unusual case of a villain becoming affectionately regarded without the franchise ever redeeming or explaining him.
What Bowser looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: A spiked green shell, orange hair, and spiked arm cuffs
The spiked shell is the identifying shape and reads well in silhouette. Green, orange and yellow is loud and instantly Nintendo. The character's bulk makes him better suited to large centre prints than to small chest marks.
