Who is Donkey Kong?
Donkey Kong was a rescue operation. Nintendo had thousands of unsold arcade cabinets of a failed game in American warehouses and needed something to put in them; Miyamoto, then a young staff artist with no design credits, was handed the job. He built a game around a climbing structure, a captive and an ape, and it saved the company's American business. The ensuing lawsuit is the more interesting part: Universal sued, claiming the ape infringed King Kong, and lost decisively when Nintendo's lawyer demonstrated that Universal had itself previously argued in court that King Kong was in the public domain. That lawyer was John Kirby, and Nintendo's gratitude is the most commonly cited explanation for a certain pink character's name. The 1994 Rare redesign gave DK the tie with his initials, which is now the character's entire emblem.

Signature motif: A brown gorilla in a red tie marked DK
The red tie with DK on it is the mark, and it is one of the most efficient in games — two letters on a red shape, no character required. Brown and red is a warm, distinctive pairing against the primary palettes elsewhere in Nintendo's line.
The DK tie is one of the most efficient marks in games — two letters on a red shape, no character needed. Brown and red is warm and distinctive against Nintendo's usual primaries. Strong across all size bands; retro arcade treatments sell well to adults.
