Who is Princess Zelda?
The series is named after her and for most of its history she was not playable in it, which is a tension the games have circled for four decades. Zelda is named after Zelda Fitzgerald — Takashi Tezuka has confirmed the borrowing, citing her as a famous and beautiful name that stayed with him — and like Link she is not a single person but a recurring role across eras. The character is consistently written as the strategist rather than the fighter: she holds the Triforce of Wisdom, she is usually the one who understands what is happening, and in several games she is operating in disguise, running her own campaign while Link does the swordwork. Ocarina of Time's Sheik is the best-known version of that. In 2024 she finally headlined her own game, thirty-eight years after the series took her name.

Why Princess Zelda endures
The title character of one of gaming's most important series, and a long-running case study in the gap between a franchise's branding and who it actually lets the player be.
What Princess Zelda looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: The Triforce, the royal crest, and the Sheikah eye
The Hylian royal crest — a stylised bird above the Triforce — is one of the most elegant heraldic marks in games, and the Sheikah eye is equally strong. Both work in single-colour gold on black and need no character present.
The Hylian royal crest and the Sheikah eye are both excellent heraldic marks — elegant, symmetrical, and perfect in single-colour gold or white on black. Neither needs the character present. Strong across all sizes; foil finishes suit them well.
