Who is Yoshi?
Yoshi was an idea Miyamoto had been trying to implement since the first Super Mario Bros. — a rideable dinosaur companion — and could not, because the Famicom hardware would not support it. He finally arrived in 1990 on the Super Famicom, five years later, which makes him a rare case of a character whose existence was gated purely by processing power. What he added was mechanically significant rather than cosmetic: the tongue grab and the flutter jump changed how the platforming worked, and the design decision that riding Yoshi absorbs one hit made him function as an extra life with legs. He has since carried his own series, and Yoshi's Island in 1995 is widely regarded as one of the best-designed platform games ever made, notable for a hand-drawn crayon aesthetic that was a deliberate rejection of the era's push toward pre-rendered realism.
Yoshi: the details
- First appearance

- Miyamoto had wanted a rideable dinosaur since the original Super Mario Bros. but the Famicom could not render it

Why Yoshi endures
One of the few companion characters to develop a successful independent franchise, and the star of a game whose deliberately hand-drawn art direction stood against the technical fashion of its era.
What Yoshi looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: Green dinosaur with a red saddle, white belly and a large nose
A very round, simple shape with a strong colour identity, which makes him one of the best characters in the whole category for young children's apparel — the design reads clearly even at small print sizes and on busy garments.
An excellent design for young children's apparel — round, simple, strongly coloured and legible at small sizes. Green garments are natural; the character also reads well on white and light blue. Egg motifs are a common secondary graphic.
