About anime & manga shirts

Anime apparel has two markets in the United States that look identical in search results. One is licensed merchandise made under agreement with the Japanese rights holders, typically through an American licensee, and sized in US sizes. The other is unlicensed print-on-demand and imported stock, which is larger in this category than in almost any other on the site. Telling them apart is most of the work of buying well here.

Design conventions differ too. Much anime apparel carries Japanese text — a title in katakana, a character name in kanji, a line of dialogue — and buyers who cannot read it are trusting the listing to say what it means. Manga-panel prints, screentone textures and series title logos are the common licensed styles, and they read as fandom rather than costume.

What to look for

  • Imported listings sometimes use Asian sizing, which typically runs about a size smaller than US sizing. Check the chart before ordering.
  • If a shirt carries Japanese text, look for a listing that says what it reads. If none does, that is worth noticing.
  • Licensed anime tees usually name the series and carry the rights holder's credit in the description. Its absence is a warning sign in this category.
  • Several of these series are rated for teens and adults. Popularity with younger children does not change what the source material contains.
