Who is Snorlax?

Snorlax is a Pokémon that does nothing, and in the original games that is exactly its job. In Pokémon Red and Green in 1996 it lies asleep across a route, blocking the way until the player finds a flute to wake it. It weighs 460 kilograms, eats about as much, and is shaped like a sofa with a face. Game Freak's staff have said its design took inspiration from one of their own colleagues. The joke has aged better than almost anything else in the first generation, because sleeping and snacking are universal, and Snorlax has become the franchise's unofficial mascot for rest — a role made literal by the sleep-tracking app Pokémon Sleep in 2023. On clothing it is the rare Pokémon that adults wear as a statement about themselves.
