L

Death Note is a thriller in which almost nothing physical happens — two very clever people try to work out who the other is, and the tension is entirely in inference. L is the detective, and Takeshi Obata's design does an enormous amount of characterisation before he speaks: barefoot, hunched, insomniac, eating almost nothing but sugar, holding objects with his fingertips.

Who is L?

Death Note is a thriller in which almost nothing physical happens — two very clever people try to work out who the other is, and the tension is entirely in inference. L is the detective, and Takeshi Obata's design does an enormous amount of characterisation before he speaks: barefoot, hunched, insomniac, eating almost nothing but sugar, holding objects with his fingertips. The series is unusually careful about who the audience is asked to side with. Its protagonist is a mass murderer with a coherent argument, and L is the untidy, socially impossible person trying to stop him — so the reader spends the whole thing rooting against the viewpoint character. The series was banned or restricted in several countries over children copying the notebook premise, which is a rare instance of a manga prompting direct institutional response.

Why L endures

The counterweight in one of the most structurally unusual thrillers in manga — a series with almost no physical conflict that nonetheless became a global bestseller, and prompted institutional bans over children imitating it.

What L looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: The white Gothic L on black; black hair, dark under-eyes, a white long-sleeved shirt

The Gothic capital L used as the character's on-screen avatar is a superb standalone mark — a single typographic glyph, no figure required, and about as minimal as licensed apparel gets. Pure black and white.

The Gothic capital L is one of the most minimal marks in licensed apparel — a single glyph, no figure, pure black and white. Extremely strong as a small chest print or a large centre graphic. Teen and adult sizing.

Where a detail could not be corroborated it has been left out. We do not physically test garments; see how we work for what that means and what it does not.
