Roronoa Zoro

Zoro is the first crew member Luffy recruits in One Piece, and his introduction in the third chapter of Eiichiro Oda's manga in 1997 sets out everything that followed: a swordsman tied to a post, refusing to break a promise, who fights with three blades at once — one in each hand and one in his mouth. His name borrows from the seventeenth-century pirate François l'Olonnais, and his ambition is simple and fixed, to become the world's greatest swordsman.

Who is Roronoa Zoro?

Zoro is the first crew member Luffy recruits in One Piece, and his introduction in the third chapter of Eiichiro Oda's manga in 1997 sets out everything that followed: a swordsman tied to a post, refusing to break a promise, who fights with three blades at once — one in each hand and one in his mouth. His name borrows from the seventeenth-century pirate François l'Olonnais, and his ambition is simple and fixed, to become the world's greatest swordsman. That clarity, and a running joke about his hopeless sense of direction, have made him one of the most popular characters in a series with hundreds of them. Kazuya Nakai voices him in Japanese and Christopher Sabat in the English dub, and Mackenyu played him in Netflix's live-action series in 2023. On a shirt he is green hair, a green haramaki sash and three swords, often with a scar across one eye from later in the story.
