Who is Howl?
Howl comes from a 1986 novel by Diana Wynne Jones, and the Ghibli film keeps the character's best joke — a supposedly terrifying wizard who is in fact a vain, cowardly young man having a tantrum about his hair. What Miyazaki added was a war. The novel has no equivalent; the 2004 film was made during the invasion of Iraq, Miyazaki has been explicit that his anger about it shaped the picture, and Howl's transformation into a winged thing to sabotage bombers he cannot stop is the film's argument about what fighting does to you. Jones, for her part, was reportedly relaxed about the divergence and said the film was not what she wrote but was good. The moving castle itself — a lurching assembly of iron, chimneys and legs — is one of the most distinctive designs the studio has produced.
