Studio Ghibli

Ponyo

Ponyo is Miyazaki's loose reworking of The Little Mermaid for very young children, and the technical decision behind it is the interesting part: he made the entire film by hand, with no computer animation at all, and drew the sea as a character in its own right — roughly 170,000 individual drawings, a substantial share of them waves. Miyazaki has said he wanted to depict the ocean as alive rather than as scenery, and the result is a film where water surges, chases and carries the plot.

Who is Ponyo?

Ponyo is Miyazaki's loose reworking of The Little Mermaid for very young children, and the technical decision behind it is the interesting part: he made the entire film by hand, with no computer animation at all, and drew the sea as a character in its own right — roughly 170,000 individual drawings, a substantial share of them waves. Miyazaki has said he wanted to depict the ocean as alive rather than as scenery, and the result is a film where water surges, chases and carries the plot. The story itself is deliberately simple and consequence-light compared with his other work: a goldfish wants to become a girl, and does, and the world floods a bit. It is aimed squarely at five-year-olds, and the round red-and-white design is among the studio's most reproducible.

Ponyo: the details

First appearance
Ponyo, released July 2008
Created by
Hayao Miyazaki
Entirely hand-drawn
Made with no computer animation, unusually even for Ghibli by 2008
Around 170,000 drawings
A large proportion of them waves, because the sea is animated as a character
The ocean is alive
Miyazaki has said he wanted water depicted as a living thing rather than as scenery
A loose Little Mermaid
Reworked for a much younger audience, with the consequences deliberately softened
Her real name
Brunhilde, given by her father — a Wagner reference the film otherwise leaves alone

Why Ponyo endures

Miyazaki's most technically committed piece of hand-drawn animation, made without computer assistance in order to animate the sea itself as a living character.

What Ponyo looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: A small round girl with orange-red hair in a red dress

One of Ghibli's simplest and boldest designs — a round red shape with a wide face, legible at very small sizes. The red-on-blue pairing against the ocean is unusually punchy for the studio and works well on toddler garments.
