Who is Kiki?
Kiki is a thirteen-year-old witch who leaves home with her black cat, Jiji, to spend a year living in a seaside town, where she starts a flying delivery service. The character comes from Eiko Kadono's 1985 novel, and Hayao Miyazaki adapted it for Studio Ghibli in 1989. The film is about growing up rather than magic: Kiki loses her ability to fly when she loses confidence, and has to find it again. Minami Takayama voiced her in Japanese; Disney's 1998 English dub cast Kirsten Dunst as Kiki and Phil Hartman as Jiji. Kiki's dark dress and big red bow, and Jiji's round black shape, are among Ghibli's most-worn designs. Miyazaki set the story in an imagined European port town that borrows from Stockholm and the Swedish town of Visby. The film was Studio Ghibli's first major box-office success and the highest-grossing Japanese film of 1989.
