Who is Tyrion Lannister?
Tyrion is the best-written character in the series and the one Martin has said he identifies with most. The construction is deliberate: he is born into the richest family on the continent and treated as its humiliation, which gives him both the education to understand power and the permanent outsider's view of how it actually operates. He survives on the only two things nobody can take from him — he reads, and he pays his debts — and the books are careful that neither is sentimental. What separates him from the wisecracking-dwarf cliché the setting could easily have produced is that the series lets him be genuinely cruel when cornered, and lets his cleverness fail. The trial sequence, where he abandons any attempt at defence and simply tells a room full of people what he thinks of them, is the high point of the adaptation.
