Who is Rubeus Hagrid?

Hagrid is the first person from the wizarding world Harry meets, and the first chapter of the series to really turn on him: a half-giant who breaks down a door, delivers a birthday cake and tells an eleven-year-old boy that he is a wizard. J. K. Rowling made him the keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts and later the Care of Magical Creatures teacher, and his affection for dangerous animals — a dragon, a giant spider, a three-headed dog — drives several plots. Robbie Coltrane played him in all eight films and was widely reported to have been Rowling's first choice. To make him look twice a normal size, the production used forced perspective and a much taller body double, former rugby player Martin Bayfield, wearing an animatronic head for wide shots. Coltrane died in 2022. Hagrid's apparel is warm and homely: his hut, his umbrella, his creatures, and the line telling Harry what he is.
