Luna Lovegood arrives in the fifth Harry Potter book, published in 2003, as the student everyone else calls Loony, and she is the series' clearest argument that being odd and being right are not opposites. She believes in creatures nobody else believes in, reads her father's magazine The Quibbler upside down, wears radish earrings and a necklace of butterbeer corks, and is entirely unbothered by what anyone thinks. She is also one of the few characters who can talk plainly to Harry about grief, because she has already lived with it. For the 2007 film, the producers held an open casting call that drew thousands of hopefuls, and Evanna Lynch — a fan of the books — won the role.
