Who is Severus Snape?
Snape is the series' longest-running structural trick: a character presented for six books as an obstacle and revealed in the seventh to have been the most consequential ally in the story. What keeps him interesting rather than merely twisty is that the revelation does not redeem him. He is genuinely cruel to children throughout, and the books never pretend the eventual explanation cancels that out — readers have been arguing about whether he is admirable for twenty-five years, which is a sign the writing did its job. Rowling told Alan Rickman the character's endpoint early in the production, years before it was published, so that he could play the part knowing something the audience and most of the cast did not. That is visible in the performance if you rewatch the early films.
