Who is Ron Weasley?

Ron is the only one of the three with nothing to distinguish him, and the books are unusually honest about how much that hurts. He is the sixth son in a family that cannot afford new robes, best friend to the most famous boy in the country, and academically outclassed by the cleverest girl in the year — and the mirror that shows a person their deepest desire shows him standing alone, holding a cup, finally first at something. That single scene does more characterisation than most series manage in a volume. His function in the plot is to be the one who knows the wizarding world from the inside, explaining it to Harry and therefore to the reader, and his defining act is the chess game, where he works out that winning requires him to be taken.
