Who is Jessie?
Jessie is the toy who has already been through what Woody fears most. Toy Story 2 introduces her as a merchandise figure from Woody's Roundup, a fictional 1950s television puppet show, and gives her a backstory told almost entirely in one song: When She Loved Me, written by Randy Newman and sung by Sarah McLachlan, in which her owner grows up and leaves her in a donation box. The sequence is about three minutes long, has no dialogue, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. It is the reason the character has weight. The film itself was originally planned as a direct-to-video release before the studio moved it to cinemas. Joan Cusack gives Jessie a loud, restless energy that plays against the sadness. Visually she is pure rodeo — a red cowboy hat, cow-print chaps, a yellow-trimmed shirt and a braid of red yarn — which makes her one of the most colourful designs in the Pixar range.
