Carl Fredricksen is a widowed balloon seller who ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies it to South America to keep a promise to his late wife, Ellie. Pete Docter directed Up for Pixar in 2009, with Bob Peterson, and Ed Asner voiced Carl. The film's wordless opening montage, which covers Carl and Ellie's whole marriage in a few minutes, is one of the most discussed sequences in animation. Carl is drawn as a square — a block of a man — against the round shape of the boy scout Russell. Up opened the Cannes Film Festival, won the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score, and was only the second animated film nominated for Best Picture.
