The character is a composite of mid-century costume designers, Edith Head most obviously, and she is drawn to match: a black bob cut straight across, glasses the size of her head, no neck to speak of. Her argument about capes is a genuine engineering objection delivered as a fashion opinion, and it is the film's whole method in one scene — take the genre's conventions seriously enough to notice they would kill you.
