Dory

Andrew Stanton wrote Dory for Ellen DeGeneres specifically, after hearing her change subject on herself several times inside one sentence on television, and the part was never offered to anyone else. Short-term memory loss is a difficult thing to build comedy on without cruelty, and the film's solution is that the other characters adapt to her rather than correct her.

Who is Dory?

Andrew Stanton wrote Dory for Ellen DeGeneres specifically, after hearing her change subject on herself several times inside one sentence on television, and the part was never offered to anyone else. Short-term memory loss is a difficult thing to build comedy on without cruelty, and the film's solution is that the other characters adapt to her rather than correct her. She is a blue tang, which had a consequence nobody wanted: unlike clownfish, blue tangs could not be bred in captivity when the films came out, so demand for them meant reef collection, and marine biologists spent years asking people not to buy one. The 2016 sequel made her the lead and grossed more than the original.

Dory: the details

Finding Nemo, May 2003
Written for one actor
Andrew Stanton wrote the part for Ellen DeGeneres and cast nobody else
The comedy is not at her expense
The other characters adapt to her memory rather than correcting it
She is a blue tang
A real reef species, distinct from Nemo's clownfish
An unwanted consequence
Blue tangs could not then be bred in captivity, so demand meant taking them from reefs
She got the sequel
Finding Dory, 2016, made her the lead
It outgrossed the original
The sequel took more at the box office than Finding Nemo did

Why Dory endures

A comic character built on memory loss without ridicule, and a rare case of an animated film measurably changing what people bought from the sea.

What Dory looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Royal blue body, black markings, yellow tail

Blue and yellow with a hard black line between them — a colour scheme that survives at any print size and on any garment colour. She is easier to render legibly than almost anything else in the Pixar catalogue.

Blue and yellow separated by hard black line — one of the most reliably legible prints on the site. Works on white, navy and heather equally. Pairs with Nemo for sibling sets.
