Pete Docter started Inside Out because his daughter changed at eleven and he wanted to know where she had gone, and the film he made out of that is unusually literal about its research. The production consulted the psychologists Dacher Keltner and Paul Ekman, and the structural idea — that memories are coloured by the emotion present when they form, and that a memory can be recoloured later — comes out of that conversation rather than a writers' room. Joy is the one who has to lose the argument. The film's whole movement is her learning that sadness is not a malfunction to be managed but the thing that lets other people help you, which is a difficult conclusion to reach in a summer family film and is the reason it is still taught. She is rendered with a particle shader that gives her a permanent faint glow, a detail nobody notices and everybody sees.
