Dug
Dug is a friendly golden retriever who can talk because of a translating collar invented by the explorer Charles Muntz, and who announces his love for Carl within seconds of meeting him. In Pixar's Up, released in 2009, he belongs to a pack of guard dogs trained to track the rare bird Kevin, but he is too kind and too easily distracted to be any good at it — the word squirrel stops him mid-sentence every time, which became one of the most repeated jokes from any Pixar film.

Who is Dug?
Dug is a friendly golden retriever who can talk because of a translating collar invented by the explorer Charles Muntz, and who announces his love for Carl within seconds of meeting him. In Pixar's Up, released in 2009, he belongs to a pack of guard dogs trained to track the rare bird Kevin, but he is too kind and too easily distracted to be any good at it — the word squirrel stops him mid-sentence every time, which became one of the most repeated jokes from any Pixar film. Bob Peterson, who co-directed Up and co-wrote it, voiced Dug himself, giving him a halting, eager delivery that sounds like a dog trying hard to be understood. The other dogs, led by the Doberman Alpha, have collars too, and Alpha's broke into a squeaky voice, which is the film's other big dog joke. Dug had his own short, Dug's Special Mission, in 2009, and a series of Disney+ shorts, Dug Days, in 2021. On clothing he is the most bought character from Up, usually with the squirrel line or his open-mouthed grin, and he works for dog owners as much as for Pixar fans. His cone of shame, which the pack forces him to wear, is another recognisable detail.
