Who is Wario?
Wario is what happens when a designer is told to make an anti-Mario and takes it literally. The name is warui, the Japanese word for bad, with the M inverted into a W — and the design follows the same logic throughout: yellow and purple against red and blue, a jagged moustache against a rounded one, greed against duty. He was created by Hiroji Kiyotake rather than by Miyamoto, which shows; he is coarser than anything else in the Mario catalogue and the games let him be genuinely unpleasant. What makes him durable is that he was given his own territory rather than kept as a villain: the WarioWare series, built on hundreds of five-second microgames, is one of Nintendo's strangest and most influential formats and has almost nothing to do with Mario at all.
