Who is Winifred Sanderson?
Hocus Pocus is the clearest example in modern film of a flop becoming a fixture. Disney released it in July 1993, opposite Jurassic Park, with a Halloween story nobody wanted in midsummer; it lost money and the reviews were poor. Then television happened — annual October broadcasts turned it into a ritual over about fifteen years, and it now generates seasonal merchandise revenue that dwarfs its original box office. Bette Midler's Winifred is why: she plays a genuinely malevolent child-killing witch at full theatrical volume as pure comedy, and the performance is broad enough to survive a hundred repeat viewings. The film's actual premise is darker than its reputation, and it is worth noting the sisters' goal throughout is to consume children.

The definitive example of a commercial failure rescued entirely by annual television scheduling, and now one of the largest seasonal apparel properties Disney owns.
What Winifred Sanderson looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: Wild red hair, a green cloak, buck teeth and a spellbook
The three-sister silhouette is the property's real asset — the trio reads instantly as a group graphic in a way individual portraits do not. Green, purple and orange gives it a Halloween palette that avoids the usual black.
