Who is Jack Skellington?
The Nightmare Before Christmas came from a poem Tim Burton wrote while working as an animator at Disney in the early 1980s, and the studio released it under the Touchstone label because it was considered too dark for the Disney name — a judgement that looks eccentric now given how thoroughly the character has been absorbed into Disney's merchandising. Burton did not direct it; Henry Selick did, over roughly three years of stop-motion animation shot at around twenty-four frames a second, with each frame requiring every puppet to be repositioned by hand. Jack's design is close to a perfect graphic: a white skull on a black pinstriped suit, drawn with two black ovals for eyes and a stitched line for a mouth. It is legible at any size, in pure black and white, which is a substantial part of why the character sells as well as he does.
